Costa Rica, one of the central american countries lies between Nicaragua in the north and Panamá in the south-east. Its surface measures 51.000km2 and it is surrounded by the carribean sea and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The population lives in the seven providences of the country: San José (the capital), Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Guanacaste, Puntarenas and Limón. Its government is democratic, the offical language is spanish, the currency is the costarican Colon, main confession: catholic - but liberal towards other religious persuations. Costa Rica is called to be 'Switzerland of Central America'. Cultivating coffee is the most common agricultural custom in an average altitude of 1200 meters above sea level. the ecological tourism has become very famous amongst international tourists visiting the national parks and private reserves of the country. Furthermore, Costa Rica is known wordwide to be one of the pioneers in the field of eco-tourism and is internationally valued to be an ecological destination. Thanks to its geographical location the climate is always stable and pleasant a mixture of mountain and tropical climate.
